are we there yet?

okay, i'm not even on the road yet (obviously) and i'm already wishing i were done driving. it's only 2-2 1/2 hours to the hotel in kokomo. i have a fish fry first (katie's parents kindly got us tickets so we wouldn't have to worry about food on the way down), then get to take off from there. so last night as i was double-checking on the cat and setting the vcr to tape the swimming competition, i looked at the dish guide, and all the times had moved up one hour. so thank goodness the football game that was on before it went into ot, or else i would have missed a good hour of competition, including michael phelps' only race of the night. whew, that was close! so i'm going there right after work to reschedule the vcr to tape an hour earlier, switch tapes and check the cat again.

i found out where we're staying (fairfield inn??) and directions to/from wherever we'll be for the weekend. that's probably a good idea, but i still haven't figured out why the time was different on the dish schedule, so i'm wondering if indy is actually a different time zone right now. but that's not really possible, i don't think, because we're eastern time (same as michigan) until the time change, then we'll be central (same as chicago). why do people have to make it so confusing? all the rest of the country does is pretend it's a different time for 6 months, only to change their minds back later!!! madness, i tell you!

on another note, elijah slept through the night in his own bed this time. he was sleeping soundly when i came up to pack at 10:30. packing is one of things i hate most in life. i can't plan my outfit the night before, so i go insane trying to plan for more than that. it's only about a 24-hour trip, but who knows what the weather will do ... and it's supposed to rain some. cold and humid or muggy or overcast or sunny or freezing, take your pick in an indiana october.

alright, i've been partaking in a top 10 in 10 (seconds) every friday. today's topic was "top 10 songs to sing along to while driving with the windows down." here's my post:
ok, to clarify, there isn't much i would sing along (audibly) with if the windows were down; i'm going to have to go with "when you're driving and all sound is safely sealed in your car." there's already enough pain and suffering in the world, people.

soooo ... ten that immediately come to mind are:

around the bend/creedence
passenger seat/death cab
hey girl/OAR
if you can't leave it be, might as well make it bleed/dashboard
everlong/foo fighters
wide open spaces/dixie chicks (scary, i know!!! it's all mel's fault)
sidewinder/REM
sweet child o' mine/GnR (seriously! that guitar riff just kills me!)
sweetness/jimmy eat world
heaven/the fire theft

p.s. as i was typing this, i got james' list and was delighted to see the GnR mention ... i also agree w/Patty Griffin and would have included Bon Jovi if i just didn't hate that band so much. i was thinking more "living on a prayer" [i meant "you give love a bad name"] though. :) bring on the cheese.

in that light, today's SOTD:

Wide Open Spaces/Dixie Chicks
Who doesn't know what I'm talking about
Who's never left home, who's never struck out
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone

Many precede and many will follow
A young girl's dreams no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out West
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

She traveled this road as a child
Wide-eyed and grinning she never tired
But now she won't be coming back with the rest
If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

As her folks drive away her dad yells, "Check the oil!"
Mom stares out the window and says
"I'm leaving my girl."
She says it didn't seem like that long ago
When she stood there and let her own folks know

She needed wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes
